This section describes where FNO3 information is stored and the principles behind FNO3 operation
The FileNotes Folder

Layouts
The central location for FNO3 information is the My Documents\filenotes folder. This folder contains all the Catalog information as well as details associated with the FNO3 option settings, Layout Templates and Column settings. This folder should be included in the backup process for the PC in the event that FNO3 requires restoring at any future date (see Restoring FNO3).
FNO3's main feature is the generation of Notes associated with files on your PC, Network and Removable Drives.
These Notes are stored in fnotes3.fno files that are located in the local folder of the file against which the notes are written
When a Note is first written or an existing Note is edited the changes and information related to the Note are entered in the fnotes3.fno file in the file's local directory.
The fnotes3.fno file is a CSV (Comma Separated Value) format file. An example of two rows from an fnotes3.fno file is shown below:
",mp71.exe,"",mp71.exe,"","",=f000010431072,=760308437,"","","","","","",Media

"",QuickTimeInstaller.zip,"",QuickTimeInstaller.zip,"","","","","","","","","","",QuickTime
Installer,"","","","","",""
Catalogs (also referred to as Virtual Folders) are accessed from the Notes Catalog Pane. There are two formats of Catalogs
Collections are stored in collectionname.fnc files located in the My Documents\filenotes\collections folder. .fnc files are text files containing the paths of all the files in the Collection.
Some example rows of a Collection are shown below

E:\Digital Camera\Work Wildlife\Squirrel Ground.JPGWhen a Collection is viewed FNO3 pulls together all the files from the Collectionname.fnc file and accesses any notes associated with the files from the fnotes3.fno file in the files local folder. The results are displayed in the File List Pane
All Notes.fnc stored in the Collections folder is a special case Collection. All Notes.fnc contains a pointer list to all the local catalog (.fno) files that are associated with FNO3.Example rows from within an All Notes.fnc file are shown below:
E:\Digital Camera\fnotes3.fno=
e:\Digital Camera\Garden\fnotes3.fno=
e:\Digital Camera\Garden\Night Sky\fnotes3.fno=

Other Catalog type (Removable, Search Results and Snapshots) are catalogname.fno files. These files are also CSV format files and are stored in the My Documents\filenotes as follows:
Catalog Folder Name Removable My Documents\filenotes\removable\X
My Documents\filenotes\removable\YWhere X is a folder that refers to the drive letter associated with the removable catalog
Search Results My Documents\filenotes\search results
Column templates are stored in the hidden folder My Documents\filenotes\templates. Each Column template is stored in a .fnt file of the same name as the template name.
The hidden file My Documents\filenotes\fn3colstorage.dat contains the custom column positions and titles. If a template is in use for a folder, then the fn3colstorage.dat file also holds the name of the template
yLayout Information
Layout information is stored in the Windows registry
