FNO3 Catalogs can be put to many uses. One of those uses with removable media files such as those on CD-ROM.
The Removable catalogs provide a powerful library feature for organizing CD-ROM's and quick access to files and their Notes through the search facility within FNO3, even without needing the CD-ROM to be loaded in the PC.
When writing notes against files on Removable Media the normal principles apply as to writing Notes against files on the fixed disk. However instead of file Notes being written into an fnotes3.fno file in the local folder of the file, FNO3 will create a single Catalog associated with all the folders and files for that particular CD-ROM
These catalogs are accessible in the Notes Catalog Pane Removable folder.
Note
FNO3 requires the removable media to have a Volume Label for generating the removable catalogs
The Removable media Volume label is used as the Catalog name

There are some rules associated with how FNO3 operates catalog files with CD-ROMs. These rules depend upon the location of FNO3 catalogs associated with files on the CD-ROM.

Location of .fno catalogs on CD-ROM |
Rules |
|
| 1 | If there are no .fno catalogs present on the CD-ROM | FNO3 writes to and reads
all notes from a dedicated catalog per CD stored on the local disk.
The catalog is stored in ../filenotes/removable/X/Volumelabel where X is the removable drive letter. |
| 2 | If a catalog file is located on the root of the CD and called Volumelabel.fno (where Volumelabel is the Volume label of the CD-ROM) | FNO3 will use this file to display notes for all folders on the CD. All Notes will be READ ONLY as the catalog file is located on the CDROM itself |
| 3 | If local fnotes3.fno catalogs located in sub-folders on the CD | FNO3 uses the fnotes3.fno file as the display source for the files in that folders. All Notes will be READ ONLY as the catalog file is located on the CDROM itself |
