Transferring Notes in Zip Files

FNO³ provides full integration with the file comments feature of the PKZIP v2.04g standard.

Notes

• When ZIP files are created by FNO³ all Notes associated with the files being zipped will be embedded as file comments into the ZIP file.
• FNO³ uses special encoding rules to merge multiple Notes fields into the single comments field available within a ZIP file
• When extracting ZIP contents FNO³ will use the decoding rules to extract the contents for each Note field stored in the ZIP file comment.
• Users receiving FNO³ created ZIP files with comments do not require FNO³ in order to be able to view Notes against files within the ZIP file. FNO³ is required to extract the Notes from the ZIP comments field.
• .fno files are not copied into the ZIP file when files are Zipped by FNO³
• When unzipping a ZIP file using FNO³ any comments will be exported to the Notes 1 field unless FNO³ encoding has been used to indicate that multiple Notes exist

Using 3rd Party ZIP Compression Programs

Embedded Notes in the comments field of a ZIP file will only be extracted into FNO³ Notes cells when using FNO³ to extract the ZIP file contents.

If using a 3rd party ZIP compression/extraction program to transfer files between PC's then the fnotes3.fno file should be included along with the files in the folder being zipped. Once the files are all extracted into the destination folder FNO³ will use the fnotes3.fno file to display the notes for the files.
